BARAMULLA, SEPT 23: Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered an FIR against a commercial passenger vehicle after it was allegedly found charging tourists double the government-prescribed fare on the Tangmarg-Gulmarg route, officials said.
During checking, police found a Scorpio bearing registration number JK05N-6166 allegedly charging ₹5,000 from tourists for the Tangmarg-Gulmarg journey, against the prescribed fare cap of ₹2,500.
Following the verification, Police Station Tangmarg registered an FIR under relevant provisions pertaining to cheating, and further investigation has been initiated.
Police said the action was aimed at protecting tourists from overcharging and ensuring strict compliance with the government-notified fare structure.
It warned commercial transport operators and drivers that overcharging, harassment or exploitation of tourists will not be tolerated.
“Commercial transport operators are required to strictly adhere to the prescribed fare structure and maintain professional and transparent conduct with tourists,” police said, adding that violations detected during checking or reported by tourists would invite action under law.
The police action also comes as an assurance to visitors that their safety, convenience and right to fair fares remain a priority.
Tourists have been urged to report instances of overcharging or harassment to police for timely intervention and necessary legal action.
Police appealed to all commercial transport operators to maintain professional conduct and contribute towards providing a safe, fair and welcoming environment for tourists visiting Baramulla district.
