Lakhanpur Police foils bovines smuggling bid, rescues 13 animals; truck seized

KATHUA, OCT 4: Lakhanpur Police foiled an alleged bovine smuggling attempt at Keerian Gandiyal naka and rescued 13 bovines from a truck being allegedly used to transport the animals from Punjab towards Jammu and Kashmir.

The action was carried out by a police team of Police Station Lakhanpur during naka checking in the Keerian Gandiyal area. The team noticed a suspicious truck bearing registration number JK02CS-9586 approaching from the Punjab side and signalled it to stop for checking.

The driver stopped the vehicle a few metres away from the naka point and allegedly fled from the spot, taking advantage of the situation. During a subsequent search, police found 13 bovines, including 10 cows and three oxen, loaded inside the truck under alleged inhumane conditions.

The animals were immediately rescued and the truck seized by police.

In connection with the case, FIR Number 134/2026 under Section 223 of the BNS and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act has been registered at Police Station Lakhanpur. Further investigation has been initiated to identify and apprehend the absconding driver and establish the wider network, if any, involved in the alleged smuggling attempt.

The action underscores Lakhanpur Police’s continued efforts to curb bovine smuggling and prevent the illegal transportation of animals through the district.
