LADAKH, SEPT 17: Two labourers were killed and three others injured after loose soil suddenly collapsed at a road construction site near Jingchan on the Ralakung Road in the Zanskar region on Thursday.
The incident occurred during construction of the road leading to Ralakung village, being executed under the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, Zanskar.
The sudden landslide trapped two labourers beneath the debris, triggering a rescue operation involving Ladakh Police personnel from Zanskar Police Station, the Tungri Rescue Team, CRPF and the Indian Army.
After sustained rescue efforts, both trapped labourers were pulled out from beneath the debris.
Police personnel from the Leh jurisdiction subsequently reached the site, sources said.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Hamid (24), son of Mohd Safi, and Pawan Kumar (26), both residents of Kishtwar.
Three other labourers sustained injuries in the incident and were shifted for medical treatment.
They were identified as Ghulam Mohd (35), son of Mohd Ramzan; Omar Wani, son of Zohar Ahmed; and Muneeb Bashir, son of Bashir Ahmed, all residents of Kishtwar. Muneeb Bashir was reported to be in stable condition.
All five labourers were reportedly engaged by a J&K-based contractor working on the road construction project.
Further details regarding the circumstances leading to the soil collapse and the ongoing investigation are awaited.
