Srinagar, Sep 23: J&K has 1750 MBBS seats across 11 medical colleges for the academic session 2026-27.
This was stated by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in its latest updated seat matrix.
This is an increase of 75 seats from the earlier seat matrix issued by the Commission mid-July this year.
The seat matrix was updated by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on September 18, 2026.
It lists 10 government medical colleges with 1600 MBBS seats and one private medical college with 150 seats in J&K.
Of the 1600 government seats, 1425 are renewed seats, and 175 have been shown as increased seats.
There has been no new seat approval in private sector and the 150 seats are those with renewed approval in ASCOMS Jammu.
The latest NMC matrix is part of an overall expansion of undergraduate medical education capacity in medical colleges across India.
The commission has said that 1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges are available for 2026-27.
Of the national total, 64,121 seats are in government medical colleges.
These include 61,185 renewed seats and 2936 new seats approved afresh this year.
Private medical colleges account for 76,543 seats.
These have 65,843 renewed seats and 10,700 increased seats.
The revised matrix also includes 3850 MBBS seats from 41 newly established medical colleges.
Interestingly, 850 seats are available now in 13 new government medical colleges in India and 3000 seats in 28 private medical colleges.
The NMC has said the updated seat matrix incorporates permissions granted for establishment of new medical colleges.
It also reflects the annual intake capacity of existing institutions by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board, the first Appellate Committee, NMC and the second Appellate Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Before the commencement of the counselling process, the commission has directed medical colleges to verify their entries in the updated matrix.
“All Medical Colleges are advised to carefully verify the details pertaining to their respective institutions in the enclosed seat matrix for the academic year 2026-27,” the notice states.
Further, it has directed the counselling authorities to ensure that admissions are made only against the seats that stand approved and notified by MARB.
“No counselling committee shall, under no circumstances, permit admission against seats in excess of the number of seats approved and notified by MARB,” the notice reads.
The NMC has also stated that any discrepancy or deviation in the approved seat matrix must be referred to MARB.
At the national level, the latest matrix represents an increase of 450 MBBS seats over the previous matrix.
Earlier, it had listed 1,40,214 seats.
The number of medical colleges has increased from 836 to 839.
