Shopian Police crack down on bootlegging, two arrested with 43 bottles of illicit liquor

SHOPIAN, SEPT 30: Intensifying its crackdown on the illegal trade in intoxicants, Shopian Police arrested two alleged bootleggers and recovered 43 bottles of illicit liquor during naka checking at Arhama area of the district.

According to police, a team from Police Station Shopian was conducting routine naka checking when it noticed two persons moving under suspicious circumstances.

The duo was intercepted and subjected to a search, during which 43 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Lawaris, son of Suriyaban Chavan, resident of Kanheri Akhola, Maharashtra, and Daramdas Khosla, son of Dhamdhari Khosla, resident of Amantpur Akhloa, Maharashtra. Both are presently residing at Alyalpora, Shopian.

Following the recovery, FIR Number 204/2026 has been registered at Police Station Shopian under the relevant provisions of law, and further investigation has been set into motion.

Police said investigators are working to establish the source of the illicit liquor as well as its intended distribution network, with forward and backward linkages being examined as part of the probe.

The action comes as Shopian Police continues its sustained enforcement campaign against the circulation of illegal intoxicants and other substances in the district.

Police urged residents to remain vigilant and share information regarding drug peddling, illegal liquor trade or substance abuse in their respective areas. Authorities said the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.

The latest recovery underscores the police’s continued zero-tolerance approach towards the illegal trade in intoxicants and efforts to curb their availability in Shopian.
