NEW DELHI, OCT 6: Indian cricket great Sourav Ganguly is set for a major return to the Indian Premier League, with Delhi Capitals appointing the former India captain as their Head Coach for the IPL 2027 season, marking a new chapter in his long association with the franchise.
The appointment takes Ganguly from the leadership and administrative side of the IPL setup into the frontline coaching arena. While the former India skipper has previously occupied several influential positions with Delhi Capitals, the 2027 campaign will be his first season as head coach of an IPL franchise. He replaces Hemang Badani, who was in charge of the team during the previous two seasons.
Ganguly’s relationship with Delhi Capitals dates back to 2019, when he joined the franchise as an advisor. He subsequently served in senior cricketing roles, including Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams, giving him extensive familiarity with the franchise’s management structure, players and support system. The franchise has now entrusted him with its most important cricketing role ahead of the next IPL season.
The move also represents a return to the dugout for a cricketer whose leadership credentials were established long before his administrative career. Ganguly captained India during a transformative period and was widely credited with helping build a more aggressive and competitive national side. His return to an IPL coaching role therefore brings not only franchise familiarity but also the experience of leading Indian cricket at the highest level.
Delhi Capitals have yet to win an IPL title, and Ganguly’s immediate challenge will be to convert the franchise’s considerable talent into a consistent title-winning campaign. His appointment comes after the team missed the playoffs in the previous two IPL seasons under Badani, making the change in leadership part of a broader effort to strengthen the franchise ahead of 2027.
Ganguly himself described Delhi Capitals as a franchise close to his heart and said his previous work with the owners, management, support staff and players would help him in the new assignment. He expressed his intention to build a strong and fearless team, signalling an emphasis on an aggressive cricketing identity under his leadership.
The timing of the appointment is particularly significant because Delhi Capitals are also entering the 2027 season with a major change in their playing group. Rishabh Pant is returning to the franchise after Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants completed a high-profile trade, while Kuldeep Yadav moved in the opposite direction. Pant had spent nine seasons with Delhi Capitals before his move to Lucknow and had previously captained the franchise.
Ganguly’s familiarity with the Capitals ecosystem could therefore prove important as the franchise reshapes its squad and coaching structure. His first major responsibilities will include assessing the existing squad, determining the team’s strategic requirements and preparing the side for the upcoming auction and IPL campaign.
The appointment also strengthens the leadership profile of Delhi Capitals, bringing together Ganguly’s cricketing experience and the franchise’s existing management structure. Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed the former India captain’s elevation, describing him as an integral part of the Capitals family and expressing confidence in his leadership.
For Ganguly, the move marks a return to one of the biggest stages in T20 cricket, but this time with responsibility for shaping the team from the coaching box rather than from an administrative office. After years spent as a player, captain, IPL administrator and cricket director, the former India skipper will now attempt to translate his leadership philosophy directly into an IPL campaign.
With a revamped squad, the return of Pant and Ganguly’s elevation to head coach, Delhi Capitals are heading into IPL 2027 with a distinctly new leadership blueprint—one that the franchise hopes can finally turn years of promise into its long-awaited maiden IPL championship.
