Viral video triggers action in Jammu; Traffic personnel attached to Hqrs over alleged bribery

JAMMU, OCT 24: Jammu and Kashmir Police have removed traffic personnel from field duties and attached them to headquarters pending an inquiry after a video purportedly showing them collecting money from truck drivers in the Greater Kailash area surfaced on social media, prompting departmental action over allegations of corruption.

Official sources said SSP Traffic Jammu Amit Bhasin initiated action after the video, reportedly recorded on Thursday, went viral across social media platforms. Taking cognisance of the allegations, the officer ordered the immediate attachment of the personnel to headquarters and directed a formal inquiry to establish the facts and determine whether any misconduct had occurred.

The action comes amid renewed scrutiny of alleged irregularities involving personnel deployed for traffic enforcement. Officials have maintained that disciplinary action would follow if the allegations are substantiated, reiterating that accountability, transparency and adherence to professional standards are essential for maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.

The latest development also brings into focus a similar incident reported in September in the Lakhanpur area of Kathua district. In that case, Jammu and Kashmir Police disengaged a Special Police Officer (SPO) from service and ordered a departmental inquiry against another police personnel after a video allegedly showing a policeman demanding money from a truck driver as an entry fee at a checkpoint circulated on social media.

The two incidents have placed alleged misconduct during the checking of commercial vehicles under departmental scrutiny, although the allegations in the Greater Kailash case remain subject to the outcome of the inquiry.

Police officials have indicated that strict action will be taken wherever wrongdoing is established. The ongoing inquiry is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the latest video and whether further disciplinary measures are warranted.

The department’s response underscores the importance of transparent enforcement and accountability in traffic policing, particularly at checkpoints and on routes frequently used by commercial transport operators.
