A group of women from Gonipora on Thursday blocked the road near the PHE Division Handwara, protesting against the acute shortage of drinking water in the area.

The protesting women raised slogans and urged the concerned authorities to take immediate measures to restore regular water supply. They said residents have been facing difficulties due to the prolonged water shortage and demanded an early resolution to the issue.

“We have been suffering for the last several years and every year water shortage takes a heavy toll on us during the autumn season. Even the concerned MLA, Sheikh Khursheed, had promised us to take concrete steps to resolve our problem, but nothing has been done so far, forcing us to register the protest again,” said a woman protester.

Later, a police party from Police Station Handwara, led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Owais Ahmad, reached the spot and pacified the protesters, following which they dispersed peacefully.
