SRINAGAR, SEPT 26: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Mithun Manhas called on Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Srinagar on Saturday and discussed matters related to the promotion and development of sports and cricket in the Union Territory.
The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of the rapid growth of cricket infrastructure and sporting activities across Jammu and Kashmir.
Manhas, a former Jammu and Kashmir and Delhi cricketer, has remained closely associated with the development of cricket in the region and was elected BCCI president in September 2025.
Sources familiar with Manhas’s earlier interactions with the J&K administration said discussions with the Lieutenant Governor have focused on strengthening cricket infrastructure, creating better training facilities, nurturing grassroots talent and providing young players with greater exposure.
In a previous meeting with LG Sinha, Manhas had discussed cricket development and sports infrastructure in J&K.
The interaction also comes months after Jammu and Kashmir created history by winning its maiden Ranji Trophy title in February 2026.
The team defeated Karnataka on the basis of its first-innings lead in the final at Hubballi, ending a 67-year wait for the coveted domestic championship.
Manhas was also present during the historic triumph and handed over the Player of the Series award to J&K’s Auqib Nabi.
The Ranji Trophy success has further strengthened the focus on developing cricket at the grassroots level in Jammu and Kashmir, with emphasis on modern infrastructure, professional coaching, talent identification and wider opportunities for players from different districts.
The J&K administration has separately been pursuing a broader expansion of sports infrastructure. A July 2026 review noted that more than 570 sports and youth infrastructure projects, with an estimated investment exceeding ₹650 crore, were at various stages across the Union Territory, including cricket academies and centres of excellence.
Manhas’s meeting with the Lieutenant Governor is therefore expected to further strengthen coordination between the BCCI and the J&K administration for the development of cricket and sports facilities and for creating greater opportunities for the region’s emerging sporting talent.
