LEH, SEPT 28: The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, in collaboration with the World Veterinary Services (WVS) Taskforce, conducted a six-day intensive veterinary training programme to strengthen the clinical and surgical capabilities of departmental personnel and support animal birth control and anti-rabies efforts across the district.
Held at the ABC Clinic, Changspa, the programme provided hands-on training in small-animal clinical care, with four departmental veterinarians receiving practical instruction in surgical procedures and two paravets trained in veterinary assistant skills. Three other veterinarians participated as volunteers during the clinical sessions.
The training combined classroom sessions with supervised procedures, covering updated protocols in anaesthesia, surgical care, patient handling and veterinary assistance, with an emphasis on skills applicable to routine livestock and stray-animal services in Leh district.
As part of the practical component, 37 stray dogs were sterilised and vaccinated against rabies, while three cats were sterilised. Femoral disarticulation surgery was also performed on one dog.
The department said the programme is aimed at enhancing field-level veterinary competence and strengthening implementation of the Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Programme in Leh.
