NDRF launches disaster management, school safety training drive across Leh

LEH, OCT 3: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Leh, in collaboration with the 13th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), on Saturday launched a district-wide Disaster Management and School Safety Training Programme at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Leh.

The inaugural session brought together students and staff of Government Girls Higher Secondary School and Government Middle School, along with officials from the Chief Education Office, Leh, with the focus on strengthening preparedness, response capabilities and safety awareness among educational institutions.

The programme featured a lecture-cum-demonstration by Inspector GD Vinod Kumar, followed by hands-on demonstrations by the NDRF team on critical emergency-response techniques. Participants were trained in basic first aid, management of soft-tissue injuries, improvised stretcher-making and the use of emergency floating rescue devices.

The NDRF personnel also demonstrated practical measures for responding to LPG cylinder leakage and fire emergencies, including the use of wet blankets and buckets for containment, providing participants with actionable techniques for handling emergencies before specialised responders arrive.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commandant Mohd. Shafiq highlighted Ladakh’s high seismic vulnerability and explained the NDRF’s role and mandate in disaster response. He urged students and school staff to follow established classroom safety protocols, remain alert and avoid panic during emergencies.

SI GD Nopu Dorjee Bhutia and Principal Kunzang Dolma attended the session and appreciated the NDRF team’s efforts in imparting practical disaster-management skills to students and staff.

The training campaign will continue across educational institutions and government departments in Leh district until October 13, 2026, with the objective of building a stronger culture of disaster preparedness, community resilience and effective emergency response.
