The Director began his visit with an inspection of the proposed Fodder Development Land at Thasgam, identified by the local community for departmental use. He assessed the suitability and development potential of the site and held discussions on its possible utilisation to expand the local fodder base, an important requirement for sustaining livestock and pashmina production in the high-altitude region.
Dr. Iftikhar Hussain subsequently interacted with members of the Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society, Bhimbat, Drass, and highlighted the considerable scope for expanding pashmina rearing as a livelihood activity. He stressed that strengthening production and adopting improved husbandry practices could contribute to enhanced incomes for local breeders while supporting the broader livestock-based economy of the region.
During the interaction, the Director apprised pashmina growers of various initiatives being undertaken by the UT Administration of Ladakh for promotion and development of the pashmina sector. He encouraged breeders to actively participate in departmental programmes and adopt improved practices aimed at enhancing both fibre quality and productivity.
As part of the department’s support to breeders, pashmina combs were distributed among local pashmina breeders, providing them with essential equipment for better management of pashmina goats and improved collection of quality fibre.
The Director also inspected the Fodder Development Farm at Bearas, reviewing its existing status and examining possibilities for further development of the facility as a dedicated Pashmina Farm, Drass. Particular attention was given to strengthening fodder production and developing adequate feed resources to support sustainable livestock and pashmina rearing in the challenging high-altitude environment.
A detailed meeting was subsequently held with Deputy Commissioner Drass Imteeaz Kacho, during which various issues relating to the expansion and strengthening of the Sheep Husbandry sector in Drass were discussed. The deliberations covered departmental activities, livestock infrastructure, fodder availability and measures required to further promote pashmina production and improve support for local breeders.
The Deputy Commissioner assured the Director of full cooperation and support from the district administration for expanding departmental interventions and strengthening sheep husbandry-related activities in Drass. District Sheep Husbandry Officer Drass Dr. Zakir Hussain also accompanied the Director during the meeting and field engagements.
Dr. Iftikhar Hussain further inspected the construction site of the Livestock Shed and Staff Quarters at Mina Marg Highland Pastures, where he reviewed the progress of the project and assessed the requirements for its effective development and utilisation.
The field visit provided the department with a first-hand assessment of the potential and challenges facing sheep husbandry and pashmina production in Drass, while also identifying areas requiring greater attention, including fodder security, livestock infrastructure, breeder support and improved production practices.
The exercise underscored the administration’s focus on developing a more sustainable and productive livestock ecosystem in the high-altitude region, with pashmina positioned as an important avenue for strengthening rural livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities for local farming and pastoral communities.
