SAMBA, OCT 6: In a significant preventive action against the drug trade, Samba Police have detained a habitual drug peddler under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, following his alleged repeated involvement in narcotics-related offences, and lodged him in jail under a formal detention order.
The detainee has been identified as Sahil Kumar, son of Raj Kumar, resident of Ward No. 7, Budwani, Tehsil and District Samba. According to police, he has been involved in multiple cases registered under the NDPS Act at different police stations in Samba district, with authorities citing his continued alleged involvement in illicit drug-peddling activities.
Police said the repeated allegations against the accused warranted preventive detention under PIT-NDPS framework, particularly in view of concerns over the impact of narcotics trafficking on the local community and youth.
As part of the action, the District Police Office Samba prepared a detailed dossier along with supporting documents and submitted the case to the office of the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, for consideration under the applicable preventive-detention provisions.
Following examination of the case, a formal detention order was issued by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu, after which Sahil Kumar was detained and lodged in jail.
The action underscores the police strategy of moving beyond individual NDPS cases and using preventive legal measures against persons whom authorities identify as repeatedly engaging in illicit narcotics activity.
Samba Police said it will continue to pursue stringent legal and preventive action against drug peddlers and smugglers, with sustained efforts aimed at disrupting narcotics networks and preventing the spread of drug abuse, particularly among young people.
The police reiterated its commitment to strengthening the anti-drug enforcement mechanism and taking action against individuals found involved in the illegal possession, transportation, distribution or trafficking of narcotic substances.
